  Fitter School Challenge May 2008

In May 2008 Bovingdon Primary School children participated in the Fitter School's Challenge.

All the children from year 1 to year 6 took part in two fitness tests within school. The tests involved skipping, throwing and catching a ball and jumping.

At the end of both tests we submitted our results on-line to the Fitter Schools Challenge, following this we have now been awarded the title of the 'UK's Fittest Primary School 2008'.

This video shows Mr Mangan and Mrs Parkins-Ellis meeting Ian Wright to receive our award.

Eco-Schools - First Green Flag awarded May 2007

Eco-Schools is a programme for environmental management and certification, and sustainable development education, for schools. Its holistic, participatory approach and combination of learning and action make it an ideal way for schools to embark on a meaningful path to improving the environments of schools and their local communities, and of influencing the lives of young people, school staff, families, local authorities etc.
The Eco-Schools Programme aims to raise students’ awareness of environmental and related sustainable development issues through classroom study together with school and community action, and provides an integrated system for environmental management of schools based on an ISO14001/EMAS approach.

As a process of facilitating sustainable development at a local level, pupils are encouraged to take an active role in practical steps to reduce the environmental impact of the school. Eco-Schools thus extends learning beyond the classroom and develops responsible attitudes and commitment both at home and in the wider community. The Eco-Schools Green Flag, awarded to schools with high achievement in their Programme, is a recognised and respected eco-label for environmental education and performance.

Congratulations and thanks to Mrs Smith and the Eco-Councillors for all their hard work.

  HOSCARS 2007 - KS2 Winners!

This competition was launched as a celebration of how Hertfordshire schools are using digital video to support learning and teaching.

Our year 6 children have used digital video cameras to make short animated films. We entered the best film, called 'Space Man' into the KS2 category and were very pleased to win a JVC Digital video camera as winners of the group.

Many congratulations to the winning group, some of which are shown here.

Accreditation of School Self Evaluation - awarded February 2006
click here to download the full report

Evidence was gathered through a scutiny of school documentation and a series of 17 interviews with staff, governors, parents and pupils. Accreditation is structured around three themes:

Culture - is self-evaluation embedded within the school's culture?

Procedures - does self-evaluation form part of the school's routine work over the course of the year?

Impact - does self-evaluation make a demonstrable difference to the continues improvement of outcomes for learners, in terms of standards, progress, personal development and well-being?

In Summary - "the school's many successes, strong position and excellent reputation are a clear result of its very effective and rigorous self-evaluation that involves all stakeholders.

The assessors have no hesitation in forwarding Bovingdon Primary School for the accreditation of its approach to self-evaluation."

ICT Mark - awarded February 2006
ICT Mark

Bovingdon Primary School is one of the first schools in the UK to receive the prestigious new ICT Mark. The new quality mark recognises schools who can demonstrate they use ICT to support all learners and all school activities. The ICT Mark is awarded by Becta, the governments lead agency for ICT in education, and recognises the success that Bovingdon has in developing a strategic approach to its use of ICT across the whole school.

Bovingdon was one of just 20 schools asked to pilot Becta's self-review framework. The framework helps schools create and implement plans for ensuring they use ICT effectively. As part of this pilot scheme, Bovingdon had to be rigorously assessed by an independent external assessor on their whole school approach to ICT from leadership and vision through to learning and teaching in the classroom.

It builds upon and will eventually replace the Naacemark, which Bovingdon already holds. (See below)

In order to gain the new award, the schools had to demonstrate that in addition to meeting the criteria set for Naacemark, they met criteria focusing on pupils' progress in ICT capability, the impact of ICT on attitudes and behaviour and pupils' progress.

NAACEmark (awarded Dec 2004)

The Naacemark has been developed by Naace, in association with Becta. It is an award which recognises a school's success in developing and implementing a strategic approach to ICT. It provides a framework for using ICT to enhance teaching and learning and provides opportunities for the school community to develop ICT capability. Working towards and gaining the Naacemark enables schools to move forward with the knowledge that they are implementing recognised good practice.

Bovingdon is only the 6th Primary school in Hertfordshire to achieve this QA mark of excellence in ICT.

Martin Mangan and Claire Hughes will be receiving the award certificate in January at the BETT exhibition in London.

Arts Mark Silver

An Artsmark is awarded to schools who show a commitment to the full range of arts - music, dance, drama and art & design. It is a national award scheme and is managed by Arts Council England.

The Artsmark is available to all schools in England. It is awarded after an application, assessment and validation process.

Basic Skills Agency

The Quality Marks provide a framework for schools and adult basic skills programmes to improve what they´re doing in terms of basic skills. By basic skills we mean reading, writing, spelling and maths.

Healthy Schools

The National Healthy Schools Standard is designed to give as much practical support as possible for schools to create an enjoyable, safe, productive learning environment and to minimise potential health risks. This means specific work on issues like drug misuse, sex and relationship education, physical exercise, safety, bullying and healthy eating, as well as strengthening an ovreall awareness of the social and emotional well-being of staff and pupils.

Investors in People

The Investors in People Standard is based on four key principles:

Commitment
Commitment to invest in people to achieve business goals

Planning
Planning how skills, individuals and teams are to be developed to achieve these goals

Action
Taking action to develop and use necessary skills in a well defined and continuing programme directly tied to business objectives

Evaluating
Evaluating outcomes of training and development for individuals' progress towards goals, the value achieved and future needs.

Achieving the Standard

• Being recognised as an "Investor in People" involves a number of steps:
• Understanding the Standard and it's strategic implications for your organisation
• Undertaking a review against the Standard to identify any gaps in current practice
• Making the commitment to meet the Standard and communicating that commitment to all members of staff
• Planning and taking action, to bring about change
• Bringing together the evidence for assessment against the Standard
• Achievement or recognition as an Investor in People

Hertfordshire Quality Standards

HQS is quality assurance scheme for providers of early education and childcare in Hertfordshire.

These providers include after school clubs, childminders, day nurseries, pre-schools, nursery and reception classes

The award reflects that the setting or childminder meets the HQS criteria and provides a high quality service.

  • How does it work?
HQS is a self-assessment process developed by Young in Herts, Hertfordshire’s Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership.
  • It encourages self-evaluation and development and is supported at each step. It enables settings and individuals to reflect and celebrate on what they do well and put in place plans to develop their quality provision.
  • An HQS manual and materials help steer everyone forward towards successful completion of the award.
  • A verifier visits those taking part in HQS. The verifiers are experienced and competent practitioners who can offer relevant support to the settings and individuals they visit.

2002 School Achievement Award

The scheme was originally developed to celebrate the achievements of schools that have either made significant improvement or are high performing. It achieved this, and over the three years that the scheme was in operation, nearly 13,800 schools won awards. Round three was the last round of the scheme.

The School Achievement Awards Scheme is now closed.

Activemark Gold

Awarded in February 2004, this award certifies that Bovingdon Primary School has achieved an Avtivemark award in recognition of its commitment to promoting the benefits of physical activity and school sport.

Special thanks to Claire Ainscough
